The School of Life and Environmental Sciences (ECVA) at the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro (UTAD) has as its fundamental mission the continuous pursuit of excellence in teaching, research, science and technology transfer, cultural dissemination, and the provision of specialised services.
ECVA is structured into five dynamic departments, which form the foundation of its extensive educational and research offerings, covering diverse fields of knowledge:

- Department of Sport, Exercise and Health
- Department of Genetics and Biotechnology
- Department of Geology
- Department of Chemistry
This organisation enables the School to attract and train students across a wide spectrum of disciplines, from essential sciences related to biology, food, and the environment, to the innovative sport sciences.
ECVA's faculty members are distinguished by their active involvement in cutting-edge research, collaborating in research centres funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). These include the
Chemistry Centre of Vila Real (CQ-VR), the
Research Centre in Sport, Health and Human Development (CIDESD), and the
Centre for Agro-environmental and Biological Technologies (CITAB). These collaborations with researchers from other schools and institutions reinforce ECVA's commitment to producing relevant knowledge and fostering innovation.
